COMPANY OVERVIEW:

Village of Promise (VoP) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Huntsville, Alabama. The organization was founded to address the needs of children and families in distressed, high-poverty neighborhoods. VoP is a Family Advancement Center with the mission of breaking the cycle of poverty, one family at a time, using a two-generational approach. Together, with our community stakeholders, we provide educational programs, sustainable tools, and opportunities that empower children and their families to advance out of poverty and lead self-sufficient, sustainable lifestyles. Each Village of Promise family has an Individualized Family Advancement Plan that addresses four key areas of their lives:

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive leader of Village of Promise. They establish a vision for the Family Advancement Mission of VoP, that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of staff members, volunteers, community partners, and Board of Directors. The ED leverages the power of relationships and networks; and works across private, public and corporate sectors, to achieve the mission of VoP. The ED possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for VoP. The ED is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the VoP families creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies for broad impact. The ED is the brand steward and understands their role in growing the valued network, relationships, reputation, and strategy of VoP. They are responsible for building trust in the VoP neighborhood and its relevance in the broader Huntsville community.

 

Job Responsibilities

Community Relationships

  • Serve as an active member of the Huntsville community
  • Establish and build relationships with leaders in the community, including those representing the highest levels in business, government and the non-profit sectors
  • Work closely with the VoP Board of Directors to craft and adapt the strategies to achieve the impact of this increased network

Resource Development

  • Drive key results in fundraising
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners
  • Leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities
  • Promote a culture of fundraising in the organization

Strategic Management

  • Serve as the principal resource for the VoP Board of Directors and its key committees
  • Provide strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation
  • Partner with the Board of Directors and VoP senior leadership team to craft organizational goals and develop strategies to ensure that goals are achieved
  • Ensure coordination and alignment of all VoP activities to strategic direction in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment

Organization Management

  • Build and lead high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborate to achieve organizational results
  • Maintain accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization with policies set by the VoP Board of Directors
  • Assess organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing
  • Directly supervise Senior Leadership positions and establish individual goals
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Accounting/Consultants to manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risks

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

  • Undergraduate (BA or BS) degree required
    • Training, experience, or advanced degree in business, education, public administration, or nonprofit management is a plus
  • 5+ years senior level management experience in or across multiple sectors, including nonprofit, public, and corporate environments
  • Accomplished strategic leadership experience in the management of organizations of comparable size and mission
  • Experience in developing partnerships, building teams, and managing conflict 
  • A demonstrated track record of promoting diversity and an ability to build collaboration with the community at large
  • Preferred experience:
    • Past success working with a Nonprofit Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
    • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
    • Grant writing skills and proposal writing experience
    • Strong North Alabama business connections and relationships

  • Must demonstrate a high level of intelligence and intellectual curiosity and a desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems
  • Possess a long-term perspective, a strong sense of accountability, and a practical ability to get things done
  • Ability to command the confidence and respect of staff, volunteers, and diverse stakeholders
  • Able to increase the visibility and awareness of VoP and its programs and services by developing and implementing a marketing strategy, building revenue, and increasing philanthropic support
